Monday morning Fran\u00e7ois arrived with a lot of cables and some gunpowder.<\/p>\n

He wants to ignite small explosions from his computer via MIDI and make a sort of a pyro-organ. We tried to find ways to construct reusable electrical igniters. First idea was to use sparks, and the whole day he tried different means to generate electrical sparks, using high voltage transformers, coils and an old camera flash he found at the local drift store.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile Max and I modified the gnusb firmware so that it enumerates as a MIDI class compliant USB device. It was an easy hack, basically just copying over some code from Martin Homuth-Rosemann’s V-USB MIDI<\/a>. Worked immediately on Mac and PC without issues. Code for the midi-gnusb is in the SVN repository on sourceforge<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Next step would be to adapt the udmx<\/a> code so it can be used directly over MIDI. Should be not more difficult than that…<\/p>\n

Anyway, sparks proved not to be very reliable and Fran\u00e7ois started to focus on finding just the right length of resistance wire to light up but not to burn. Later that night, the silence was broken several times by successful ignition of small explosive charges on the kitchen table… \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n
