Downhill_Quintet und fahrende Jukebox

Zum einen:
Musik aus “Der Kiste”
– Soundtrack des Appenzellerlands 2013

Ob absichtsvoll oder zufällig: In jeder Sekunde und fast überall klingt es, doch Geräusche sind vergänglich. Schade eigentlich, denn sie erzählen soviel von Menschen und ihrem Tun, von Orten und der Kultur. Höchste Zeit also für ein Tonarchiv. Ein Jahr Feldforschung, daraus entstanden ist ein Querschnitt durch die Appenzeller Klanglandschaft, auf 200 7“ Vinyl-Schallplatten gekratzt, in 200 informative Hüllen verpackt und mit bewegtem Bildmaterial archiviert.

Diese einmalig-einzigartige Appenzeller Tonsammlung heisst «Die Kiste» - eine überdimensionale Jukebox, die mit der Ledi-Wanderbühne von Frühling bis Herbst das Land durchkreuzt. Den Tonarm setzt ein leibhaftiger DJ aufs Vinyl, dem die Besucher vor Ort ihre Wünsche zuflüstern dürfen.

Seriöse Feldforschung hat kein Ende. Ob urchig oder geschliffen, musikalisch oder chaotisch, scheinbar oder herzzerreissend, jedes Klangstück aus “der Kiste” erzählt seine eigene, unvollständige Geschichte. Wo die Jukebox aufhört, macht das Downhill_Quintet weiter. Es schichtet weiter, öffnet Abgründe, schleift rund, forscht und hackt im phantastischen Material. Es betrachtet mikroskopisch, färbt und beleuchtet aus ungeahnten Perspektiven, driftet ab um sanft zu landen! Ein minimal-, sureal, homöopathisches Kammerspiel querbeet durch die Süsswasser-Molasse, interaktiv obendrein und (wer weiss?) kurz bevor der Meeresspiegel wieder steigt.

The Indian Sonic Research Organisation, Bangalore will collaborate on a sound performance with swiss artists [ a n y m a ] and Marc Dusseiller (dusjagr). The artists will perform live with electronic music toys and create visuals with the videobass invented by Michael Egger (member of anyma) who has also invented several open source visual music instruments. The award winning VIDEOBASS is a bass guitar that plays images instead of sounds, lets you choose a video clip on the strings with your left hand, and trigger it in rhythm with your right. The visual artists and musicians will work in an improvisational dialogue. This audiovisual performance promises to be more musical than cinematographic – a layering of textures that forms abstract visual poems.

L’IMO est un très grand ensemble d’improvisateurs, fondé en septembre 2010. Il rassemble habituellement par concerts entre 35 et 60 musiciens de toute la Suisse et au-delà.
L’orchestre cherche à développer l’écoute et le jeu collectif, tant en improvisation libre que dirigée.
L’IMO est le reflet d’une scène musicale et d’un réseau de musiciens. ll est un espace d’échange et de partage.

Nous venons de developer et réaliser une petite expo sur les chauves-souris pour le centre nature de Pronatura à Yverdon Champ-Pittet, ensemble avec Gisèle Rime pour les illustrations, Daniel Waldvogel pour le gros œuvre et Pronatura pour le contenu scientifique. Ressemblant à une Batmobile dans une ambiance steampunk, ce petit espace traite divers thèmes sur les chauve-souris avec plein de jeux intéractifs.

L’expo sera visible quelques années, tous les jours sauf le lundi et durant la fermeture hivernale.

On est tenté de parler d’un supergroupe fribourgeois : Lionel Gaillard (g), Fabrice Seydoux (dr) et Mathias Bieri (g) ont tous déjà apporté des contributions exceptionnelles dans plusieurs groupes et dans les domaines variés du musique biz’ness. Ce qui a commencé avec le pur plaisir de jouer du rock sale s’est avéré bien durable – en voici la preuve avec «Spencer’s Return», leur premier album.

Unfortunately the 16mm film reels for the Adolfas Mekas retrospective are still stuck in India’s customs waiting for endless signatures (and maybe some bak-shish?), but Pola Chapelle managed to bring another copy of the opening movie ‘Hallelujah The Hills’ in her luggage. There were a lot of sound problems that made the screening somewhat painful and on the third reel the image got more and more blurry - first I thought it was a problem with the 16mm projector and I felt really sorry for the projectionist, but it turns out that it was a really strange lab error, only on this copy of the film. Looks like the guy that developed the film went for a coffee break or something and didn’t realize that the shutter got stuck, resulting in a strange vertical motion blur and double exposure, with the shutter occasionally blocking out parts of the image. Looked quite like what we sometimes do with the videobass and I liked this part of the film most.. ;-)

1 December - Checking out Bangalore and workshop preps

We didn’t want to bring all the material for the workshop over from Switzerland, so the plan was to go shopping in Bangalore for the rest of the electronics parts and especially to find some old security cameras, TV’s and camera viewfinders to tinker with, but:

All electronics shops are closed because of a strike in protest of the government plans to allow for more than 50% of foreign direct investment in retail. Although we can understand and stand behind this decision, we’re a little bit pissed because we should absolutely get some supplies for our workshop tomorrow…

Fortunately we can source some old small black and white TVs at the market in Shivajinagar. Even though one of the TV-Repairman we go to wants to convince us that the era of CRTs is over. For about 15 minutes discussion, which ended somewhat like this:
- “Everybody is going to use LCD now - what do you want with CRTs?”
- “It’s just to open them up and play with them. For educational purposes”
- “No use for educating people about CRT, it’s all about LCD now!”
- “So why do you have all these CRTs in your shop?”
- “For educational purposes.”
We should have made an interview with the guy. Some blocks further we found another shop and I let Yashas do the negotiations:

2 December: The workshop at Jaaga

Jaaga Creative Common Ground is a cool project in the heart of Bangalore, it is an open space (both literally and symbolically). A social and collaborative place for a wide range of forward thinking people. Anyone can apply to use the space at no charge, assuming their event is open to all and has social, environmental, technological or artistic value.

Maïté checking out Jaaga’s modular architecture, a space built from pallet rack shelving, that evolves with the needs of its “inhabitants”.

The workshop turned out good, even if the beginning was a bit chaotic because we didn’t have all the material we needed… The time was very short as well - but despite all odds, in the end there were some funny noises coming out of self built synthesizers and oscillators directly modulating the magnetic coils of TV sets…
I’ve also brought a miniature, battery powered version of the Synkie (just the sync-splitter and the resyncer in one module) that I left to Bidisha, an enthusiastic participant, who from now on will be the Synkie’s ambassador to India…

3 December - Performance

The place where we are playing at 7 High Street is a very nice early 20th century english one story building that normally serves as an office for an urban think-tank that goes by the same name. Created in 2009, 7 HIGH STREET THINK TANK is an non-profit organization, involved in operational research for the development of urban strategies, public governance, climate change and sustainable development.
For the ending party of the festival they moved out all of the furniture, making lots of space and nice white walls for us to project onto.

Playing with Yashas Shetty was intense and inspiring. We played 3 sets, the second one ended in a dramatic break because of a power outage happening at just the right moment… Marc Dusseiller occasionally joined us, and the audience seemed really captivated throughout the whole performance. Below are some excerpts - a badly edited bad recording but better than nothing:

We will present the brand new Videobass at some universities in New York this fall.

It will also be possible to see the instrument in action, played by Angie Eng at the New York Electronic Festival on october 9th followed by an artist talk on october 10th.

The Videobass

The Videobass is an open source instrument that plays moving images instead of sound, invented by Michael Egger.
It won the “Werkbeiträge Digitale Kultur” award of the Migros Kulturprozent - and recently, two renown video artists, Angie Eng and Cécile Lacombe, have commissioned their own instruments. This was a great occasion to review a lot of things and a a result, the videobass version 2011 was born.

“[…] Und zu welchen Wundern der improvisierte intermediale Austausch beflügeln kann, belegt die Performance «Gestes Ephemeres». Die abenteuerliche Ausgangslage: Auf einem Glastisch schafft der Maler Wojtek Klakla ein InstantWerk, dessen Entstehen von einer Kamera gefilmt wird. Mit einem speziell konstruierten Video-Bass werden die digitalen Bilder von der Künstlerin Maïte Colin verfremdet, um in einem dritten Prozess vom Video-Mixer Michael Egger dreidimensional zum Leben erweckt zu werden. Dazu improvisieren Gérald Zbinden, Hans Burgener und Markus Lauterburg an Gitarre, Schlagzeug und Geige. Und hier greifen die Quellen denn auch tatsächlich ineinander. Das Bild irrlichtert vom Figürlichen ins Abstrakte, beginnt sich zu bewegen, beginnt zu leben, steckt mal in der Krise, um im nächsten Moment mit neuen Konturen zu überraschen. Ebenso die Musik, die sich verdichtet, in sich zusammenfällt, vom Orientierungslosen ins Substantielle changiert. For the first 4 Days we installed our Analog Visuals Labor at the Bâtiment d’art contemporain, where we exposed the Synkie and continued to work on it. For the Vernissage we performed live with Nikki Neeke.

Flo Kaufmann (*1973, vit à Soleure), Michael Egger (*1974, vit à Fribourg) et Max Egger (*1979, vit à Genève) font des visuels totalement analogique. Ils utilisent le Synkie, un synthé vidéo modulaire qu’ils ont eux-même créé. Kaufmann et les frères Egger re-explorent et réinventent un passé, mais avec la connaissance de l’histoire ésthétique qui suit, celle de l’art digital. Le project est présenté dans l’exposition comme un laboratoire où les artistes travaillent et expliquent leur travail. Lors du vernissage mercredi à 20h, ils accueilleront au sein de leur laboratoire Niki Neecke pour une performance musicale.

analog visuals and laboratory at the shift festival basel

Michael Egger und Flo Kaufmann machen analoge Visuals, ganz ohne Computer. Sie benutzen dazu alte Videosynthesizer und Geräte aus den 1970er- und 1980er-Jahren, allen voran dem EMS Spectre von 1974 aus der Referenzsammlung von AktiveArchive (Hochschule der Künste Bern), der von Kaufmann restauriert wurde.

Zudem haben sie zusammen mit Max Egger einen eigenen analogen Videoprozessor entwickelt: Der SYNKIE ist ein modulares System zur Bearbeitung von analog Videosignalen in Echtzeit - ein Bildinstrument - vergleichbar mit den berühmten Moog Synthesizern aus den 60er und 70er Jahren, aber für Videobilder.
Eine Art Neuerfindung von Technik der Vergangenheit welche zum ersten Mal einem breiteren Publikum gezeigt wird. Weltpremiere !

Michael Egger und Flo Kaufmann werden ihre Instrumente in der Ausstellung als Laborsituation aufbauen, weiter daran arbeiten und in öffentlichen Talks den Zuschauern vorstellen, sowie am Freitag die Konzerte in der Konzerthalle visuell begleiten.

Conçue uniquement à partir des multiples sonorités de la contrebasse et de la basse, la musique d’Olivier Nussbaum offre des atmosphères aux couleurs inattendues, des mélodies et des « grooves » aux timbres surprenants.

A ses côtés, Stéphane Mercier alias Size, ambiancier inspiré et créateur de loops incisifs ou de climats sonores subtils, le seconde et l’accompagne tel un magicien du son et du silence.

Maïté Colin et Michael Egger du collectif [ anyma ] travaillent selon une approche très musicale de l‘image. La vidéo est un signal, elle est un “fluide”, modulable dans l’instant. Comme un son, une image peut-être basse ou aiguë, frêle ou profonde, elle peut-être murmure, suggestion ou injonction.

Il s’agit d’un véritable quartet qui joue et improvise en musique et en images dans une énergie commune et une interactivité constante.

Die musikalisch-visuelle Invasion vom Lande.

Die Besetzung Kontrabass, Cello, Akkordeon, Videobass, Schlagzeug und Electronics lässt eine unkonventionelle “Stobete“ erahnen. Als Rohmaterial dienen alte Schellack-Platten mit Appenzeller Streichmusik, aufgenommen zwischen 1920 - 1950. Sie sind die Inspirationsquelle und werden gleichzeitig mittels Electronics in die Musik integriert. “Wir wollen, inspiriert von der traditoniellen Musik, unsere eigene Musik weiterentwickeln. ”

Die Ausstellung “Schamanen der nördlichen Magar - eine Ethnographie in Bildern” im Völkerkundemuseum der Universität Zürich - für welche wir das Projektionssystem entwickelt haben - ist geöffnet vom 4. November 2007 bis zum 16. März 2008.

Die Ausstellung ist der bis auf den heutigen Tag gebräuchlichen schamanischen Praxis der nördlichen Magar in einem abgelegenen Dorf im nepalesischen Himalaya gewidmet. Sie zeigt Photographien, die im Rahmen einer vom Ethnologen Michael Oppitz am Fusse des Dhaulagiri-Massivs durchgeführten mehrjährigen Feldforschung zwischen 1977 und 1984 aufgenommen wurden. Die Bilder führen uns mitten in die alltägliche Welt der nördlichen Magar, lassen uns am Leben und Wirken der Schamanen teilnehmen, zeigen ihre heiligen Handlungen, aber auch das Umfeld ihrer Rituale, die beteiligten Familien, die Architektur und die bedeutungsgeladene Landschaft.

Anlässlich des SEHNsOHR Festivals (25 Jahre WIM Bern) in der Dampfzentrale Bern haben wir am 30./31. März zwei mal “Gestes Ephémères” spielen können, und dazu gute Presse gekriegt:

“[…] Und zu welchen Wundern der improvisierte intermediale Austausch beflügeln kann, belegt die Performance «Gestes Ephemeres». Die abenteuerliche Ausgangslage: Auf einem Glastisch schafft der Maler Wojtek Klakla ein InstantWerk, dessen Entstehen von einer Kamera gefilmt wird. Mit einem speziell konstruierten Video-Bass werden die digitalen Bilder von der Künstlerin Maïte Colin verfremdet, um in einem dritten Prozess vom Video-Mixer Michael Egger dreidimensional zum Leben erweckt zu werden. Dazu improvisieren Gérald Zbinden, Hans Burgener und Markus Lauterburg an Gitarre, Schlagzeug und Geige. Und hier greifen die Quellen denn auch tatsächlich ineinander. Das Bild irrlichtert vom Figürlichen ins Abstrakte, beginnt sich zu bewegen, beginnt zu leben, steckt mal in der Krise, um im nächsten Moment mit neuen Konturen zu überraschen. Ebenso die Musik, die sich verdichtet, in sich zusammenfällt, vom Orientierungslosen ins Substantielle changiert. Hier wird vorexerziert, was Improvisation zu schaffen vermag, wenn der Rahmen nicht allzu weit gesteckt ist und das Konzept doch so offen ist, dass ein vollkommen autarkes Unikat entstehen kann. Just in time for our appearance at the “Homemade Festival” in Glarus, I finished the first version of my new “virtual video mixing console”. Version 1.0 had just some buttons, 8 rotary encoders and 8 faders. It was getting of age and I didn’t like to perform with it anymore. So, months of work and about 2000 solder points later, a dream comes true…

CodeZed - A video clip out of nowhere.
CodeZed is a visual playground, interactive dancefloor, social laboratory, time tunnel and random access video feedback machine. People acting between camera and screen are filmed randomly and projected in rythm to the music sometime later, maybe… As the projection is part of the filmed image, layer upon layer of different time slices are added like onion skins, creating interaction between the present and different pasts. Strange polyrythmic timepatterns appear and fade out again, dissolving to nebulae if the processus is not sustained by human intervention.

Description

CodeZed consists of a box containing a video camera, a TV monitor showing the live feed of the camera and a computer running the installation software (written in MaxMSP/jitter). The box faces a projection screen or white wall, at least 4m x 3m. It is important that the screen goes all the way down to the floor, with as little a border as possible. A video projector (VGA) is mounted on the ceiling such as to completely fill the visual field of the camera.

CodeZed works best with dance music. It needs a DJ and is best placed in a club or at a party.
The space between the box and the screen needs to be big enough for some people to dance.

Lighting & projection

Controlled lighting is crucial for the installation to function properly.
The room has to be dark enough to allow for a good projection, but some light is needed for the camera. Depending of the light output of the beamer and the screen size, a good balance has to be found.

Equipment

We can provide: Box, Camera, Monitor, Computer, as well as a small beamer (2000 ANSI lumens) for small venues.
A more powerful beamer would be helpful.

“Musik wird oft nicht schön gefunden, weil sie stets mit Geräusch verbunden” - dies stellte schon Wilhelm Busch fest, obwohl Musik zu seiner Zeit mit Sicherheit geräuscharmer war als heute.
