Une performance audio-visuelle

Un artiste qui peint en direct une œuvre éphémère, une vidéaste-bassiste qui joue les images de ce geste pictural, un mixer-vidéaste qui les retravaille en direct, un guitariste qui improvise en s’inspirant de ces images projetées, sa musique inspirant le trio d’images, et la boucle se referme…

Conçue uniquement à partir des multiples sonorités de la contrebasse et de la basse, la musique d’Olivier Nussbaum offre des atmosphères aux couleurs inattendues, des mélodies et des « grooves » aux timbres surprenants.

A ses côtés, Stéphane Mercier alias Size, ambiancier inspiré et créateur de loops incisifs ou de climats sonores subtils, le seconde et l’accompagne tel un magicien du son et du silence.

Maïté Colin et Michael Egger du collectif [ anyma ] travaillent selon une approche très musicale de l‘image. La vidéo est un signal, elle est un “fluide”, modulable dans l’instant. Comme un son, une image peut-être basse ou aiguë, frêle ou profonde, elle peut-être murmure, suggestion ou injonction.

Il s’agit d’un véritable quartet qui joue et improvise en musique et en images dans une énergie commune et une interactivité constante.

Dank eines Werkbeitrages für Neue Medien des Migros Kulturprozent werden wir unsere Videoinstrumente weiter entwickeln können und vor allem an deren Dokumentation arbeiten.

Das Ziel ist es, alle unsere Instrumente unter Open Source Lizenzen (GPL, Creative Commons..) zu publizieren. Bei allem Bauen, Entwickeln, Ausprobieren, Forschen und Aufführen ist aber das Dokumentieren ein bisschen auf der Strecke geblieben, daher gibt es auf unserer Website auch nur wenig darüber zu finden.
Dank der Unterstützung des Migros Kulturprozent können wir das nun nachholen. Danke.

Anlässlich des SEHNsOHR Festivals (25 Jahre WIM Bern) in der Dampfzentrale Bern haben wir am 30./31. März zwei mal “Gestes Ephémères” spielen können, und dazu gute Presse gekriegt:

“[…] Und zu welchen Wundern der improvisierte intermediale Austausch beflügeln kann, belegt die Performance «Gestes Ephemeres». Die abenteuerliche Ausgangslage: Auf einem Glastisch schafft der Maler Wojtek Klakla ein InstantWerk, dessen Entstehen von einer Kamera gefilmt wird. Mit einem speziell konstruierten Video-Bass werden die digitalen Bilder von der Künstlerin Maïte Colin verfremdet, um in einem dritten Prozess vom Video-Mixer Michael Egger dreidimensional zum Leben erweckt zu werden. Dazu improvisieren Gérald Zbinden, Hans Burgener und Markus Lauterburg an Gitarre, Schlagzeug und Geige. Und hier greifen die Quellen denn auch tatsächlich ineinander. Das Bild irrlichtert vom Figürlichen ins Abstrakte, beginnt sich zu bewegen, beginnt zu leben, steckt mal in der Krise, um im nächsten Moment mit neuen Konturen zu überraschen. Ebenso die Musik, die sich verdichtet, in sich zusammenfällt, vom Orientierungslosen ins Substantielle changiert. Hier wird vorexerziert, was Improvisation zu schaffen vermag, wenn der Rahmen nicht allzu weit gesteckt ist und das Konzept doch so offen ist, dass ein vollkommen autarkes Unikat entstehen kann. “Moona est une feline curieuse de tous les arts,…” … et Moona a fait un petit documentaire sur la nouvelle version de la vidéobasse lors de notre concert avec Olivier Nussbaum au vernissage du roman “Train fantôme” de David Collin (Editions Seuil).

La documentation de la basse est malheureusement un peu en retard. Je m’y mets dès que possible…

This video illustrates the making of a Videobass string. In order to wind the strings, I built a simple machine from parts lying around - some wood and gear wheels from a used laser toner cartridge - driven by an old sewing machine.

Videobass strings are made of a 1.5mm nylon core, wound with 0.1mm resistance (constantan) wire.
I got the nylon from a local fishing shop and the wire from Distrelec (Article No 513861).

First I roughen the nylon a bit with sanding paper (240), so that the constantan wire doesn’t slip.
I then wind the wire very tightly around the nylon. There has to be not the slightest gap, nor any crossings! It’s much easier to get it tight when you hold the wire quite far away. With a little practice it takes about five minutes to wind the string.
Finally the string is polished with very fine sanding paper (600), to even it out. This makes it more comfortable to touch and improves electrical contact with the fingerboard.
The ends are sealed by melting the nylon with a lighter.

A typical string of 60cm has a resistance of about 2kOhm - compared to the resistance of the wire at 62Ohms per meter that’s about 32m of wire per string !
